Kids BJJ Classes In Bacchus Marsh
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most valuable things a child can learn.
It teaches them how to stay calm under pressure, how to think clearly when it's hard, and how to solve problems, on and off the mat. It also happens to be one of the most effective forms of self-defence in the world.
At Art of Training in Bacchus Marsh, our Kids BJJ program is coached by 2 amazing black belt instructors in a structured, welcoming, and age-appropriate environment. Your child doesn't need to be strong, fit, or experienced. They just need to show up.
Why BJJ Is One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your Child
Parents who enrol their kids in BJJ often say the same thing after a few months, they wish they'd started sooner.
Here's what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu builds in children that few other activities can match:
Problem-Solving Under Pressure: BJJ is often described as physical chess. Kids learn to think, adapt, and stay calm when they're in a tough position. That mental skill transfers to every area of life.
Real Self-Defence Ability: Unlike striking arts, BJJ teaches children how to control a situation on the ground, which is where most real-world confrontations end up. It gives kids the ability to protect themselves without needing to hurt anyone.
Confidence Without Arrogance: There's a quiet confidence that comes from knowing you can handle yourself. BJJ-trained kids tend to be calmer and less reactive because they have nothing to prove.
Discipline and Persistence: Progress in BJJ is gradual and earned. Kids learn that showing up consistently and working hard is how you improve. That lesson is priceless.
Teamwork and Respect: Every session is done with a partner. Kids learn to look after each other, communicate, and respect the process together

What Our Kids BJJ Classes Look Like
-
Warm-Up: Movement drills, games, and BJJ-specific exercises to get kids moving and engaged. Fun is part of the program.
-
Technique: The coach introduces a position, escape, or submission in a clear, step-by-step way. Kids drill it with a partner with close coaching supervision.
-
Positional Drilling: Controlled situational exercises where kids apply the technique in a live but structured setting.
-
Live Rolling (Age & Level Appropriate) When kids are ready, they practice grappling with partners in a safe, controlled way. This is the most exciting part, and where kids develop real feel for the art.
-
Cool Down: Class closes with reflection, feedback, and reinforcement of the values we build through training.

This is the first question almost every parent asks — and it's the right one.
Yes. Safety is our highest priority. Kids BJJ at Art of Training involves no harmful contact. Children drill technique with partners in a controlled way, and are supervised by experienced coaches at all times.

What Your Child Needs to Get Started?
For their free trial class, your child just needs:
-
Comfortable athletic clothing (shorts and a t-shirt)
-
A water bottle
-
Slides or Crocs for when you're off the mats - we train bare feet.
What age can my child start?
We start at age 5, however, if you have an active, attentive and focused 4 year old, let us know. We offer trials to younger students.
What if my child is shy or nervous?
This is very common and our coaches are experienced at helping nervous kids settle in. We'd encourage you to come and watch the free trial class, most shy kids surprise their parents within the first 15 minutes. Others sometimes need a session to watch before joining in, we have plenty of students training with us who were incredibly shy on session number 1 - 14 years later one of them now coaches our kids classes!
How often should my child train?
BJJ is an technical sport and we encourage our students and families to attend both classes we offer each week. We understand sometimes this clashes and only allows students to train 1x per week.
